Some finches build roosting nests, so this is not necessarily breeding related (although it may be). Also some finches indulge in courting behaviour (which for the Diamond Firetail is quite an interesting spectacle, they have a bobbing dance that they do, carrying a long piece of grass) at times of year that they are not breeding. Also, Australian finches sing for sex and sociality rather than for territories (unlike most songbirds) although that is a generalisation. Philip |
