To find the spot, come up Ginninderra Drive, turn left into Archdall St then take the first right onto Hugh McKay Crescent. About 200-300 metres along you will see a road off to the right that goes through an open boom gate. There is a small sign on the left pointing to Jarramlee Homestead. Follow the road through the boom gate down the hill, across the low level crossing and up the hill on the other side.

On your left, the wire fence follows the road for a while then turns off to the left leaving a fairly large open area with two dead fire thorn bushes in it. The Zebra Finches started in the smaller bush, flew across to the larger and eventually crossed the fence into the trees on the left. You can park on the road (but watch out for eroded storm water gully ) or about 70 metres further up the hill in a turning place just outside the Homestead gate.

In that area there are also at least three Diamond Firetails (usually in the trees across the fence) as well as Wrens, Thornbills and larger species. The Red-Rumped Parrots and Dusky Wood Swallows may or may not be there. A variety of birds use the trees in the paddock and the small group of conifers just inside the homestead paddock boundary.

Hi Joe,
I will be heading out to take a look this afternoon at 6pm. Have you got any more precise directions? Were they close to the causeway across the creek or further along the road? I would like to see the Zebra Finches as I have never seen them in the wild, let alone in the ACT!

Cheers
Marnix

  Classification

At least two Zebra Finches seen in bushes along Jarramlee Homestead Road
this morning associating with the local Diamond Firetails and Superb Blue
Wrens. First I've seen in Canberra for more than 20 years. Nearly a
kilometre from any housing. Are these likely to be true visitors or yet
more escapees?
