As announced in Gang-gang I will lead a cycle tour
of Lake Burley Griffin next Sunday. I did a recce of the route this
morning and it is all pretty much as advertised especially the bit about meeting
by Mr Spokes at 8am. A couple of the less common birds appear to have
moved on, but I still recorded 38 species (with a few gimmes awol) in the
circuit - and didn't spend a lot of time at stop. I would hope that with
extra eyes and ears, spending more time than I did today we would get close to
50.
The darter/cormorant nesting area at Black Mountain
Peninsula is still in very good form with nests cleary visible from the
banks of the Peninsula and from the bike path. In view of the appalling
threat of waterskiers being allowed in this area - and to prevent people's
firewalls from blocking this message I will save saying what I really think of
this disgusting prospect until Sunday - it may be worthwhile spending a
little more time at this final planned stop to see if we can do a solid count
and mapping of this site. Those with a need to leave a tad earlier could
pedal on to the end frm that point.
