You may recall my
raising the matter of the big dam at Mulligan's Flat last year. I've just
had some very good feedback from Environment ACT (EACT) about the matter and
reproduce a summary of it below. I've passed the matter to the COG
Committee for follow-up.

Summary of messges
from EACT
The dam has now broken
twice. Originally (many years ago) this dam was not keyed
in to the base ground and not compacted well. When it first breached after a
major rain event we had some minimal budget to make a repair hoping that this
would last longer than it did. Then it broke again adjacent to the repair.
During this time Gungahlin was growing and ACT Planning did not want us to
repair it again due to the volume of water and flood levels onto school playing
fields if it broke in the future. We knew that a complete removal and
reconstruction is the only way to retain integrity of the
structure.
ACT Planning want
reconstruction
to much higher safety
standards than a rural farm dam but there are moves afoot to obtain capital
works funding. Please keep in touch as we all really liked this dam environment
in particular the waterbirds and the rare Lathams
Snipe. It just may be that the Snipe will be our key reason to request
reconstruction.
