Just one caution - it's best to scrub off the existing algae (with an old nail or tooth brush) and rinse before filling with fresh water and the mint leaves. Mint holds the algal growth down, and the birds don't mind a mint-flavoured drink, but you might not get such good results if you start with a mess - aka the currawongs pellets ... and sorry I don't have any hints about them.
