Hi Greg,

Actually, HANZAB says 'hawking' insects which implicitly means in flight. I
described aerial catching of flying insects by a juvenile male nearing
independence in my paper on the post-fledging period (2009, AFO 26: 76-99),
and in a review of post-HANZAB literature I'm doing (and will publish as a
HANZAB update on eagles) there is an account of apparently communal hawking
of flying insects in the tropics (2006, Boobook 24: 15). HANZAB is now over
20 years old; the subsequent literature (and there's a lot on raptors) would
be a good place to start!

Cheers,

Steve
