Hi all,

I read an email here a few days back saying how wonderful East Gippsland is
looking at the moment and I want to agree, totally. We went down for the
Labour Day weekend and over 3 days I saw more than 100 species including
the Beach Stone-curlew, Beautiful Firetail, Lyrebird, Large-billed
Scrubwren, Southern Emu-wren, Pilotbird in full display in the sun at East
Cape and three species of owl; Masked, Sooty and Powerful.

Interestingly, after many years of birding, it was the first Powerful Owl I
have seen at night. Normally I don't go looking for them in the dark, I
just see them during the day with some possum clenched in a talon.

My dip for the weekend? There has been a White-headed Pigeon hanging out on
the power poles in Marlo, across from the hotel. We tried at least three
times a day and there was no sign of it. Bother!

We were based in Orbost but there are good caravan parks at Marlo too.
There has been no fire damage south of the Princes Highway and the bush is
in very good condition.

cheers

Jenny
