Hi Mark and others interested
I am revisiting this topic as I am keen to hear how the trip went
and curious about your dog-friendly travel route. In fact as a dog
owning nature lover myself I would love to hear about trips people
have done with their canine pals and places they find dog friendly.
For travelling with dogs I have the following thoughts/suggestions.
Hope it helps someone!
Many National Park areas simply will not allow dogs - in Victoria I know of
some that will allow dogs in a controlled capacity. Others will allow them in
transit ie in cars on main roads/sealed car parks.
Best to know in advance - I can give you some ideas for some places in Vic
Checklist for dog:
- secure harness/crate for in car
- extra collar
- vaccination record (C5) just in case you need to use a day/boarding kennel
- first aid kit
- bags for cleaning up after your dog
- sturdy crate or tether set up that dog is used to (so not just confined to
car/camper) tether best to have strong smooth chain or plastic coated cable and
swivel ends
- some water dog is used to (in case it doesn't drink the 'foreign' water)
- emergency numbers (vets etc in areas you will be travelling)
Things to be careful of:
- snake and tick areas
- wandering off/investigating livestock, wildlife etc
- fox bait 1080 - lethal
- not leaving dog alone in car for long periods
- supervision/ventilation/shade/warmth/water/food
