Birdline North Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 21 Aug 2011.

Sun 21 Aug Rufous Owl Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge
The fist sighting of this species this year. Most years we have a few sightings of Juvenile birds but they are only passing through and don't stay. Nice to have them around but they like to eat our Striped Possums! This bird looked like an immature.

Sat 20 Aug Bassian Thrush Jourama Falls
Typically strongly marked Thrush (most probably Basisan) almost burrowing through leaves under Cyclone Yasi toppled tree between Jourama camping area and start of walk to falls. About 400 metres too low if Bassian; closer to 600m if Russet-tailed. Also in area: Wompoo and Top-knot Pigeons,

Thu 18 Aug Barred Cuckoo-shrike, Pied Imperial-Pigeon Smithfield, Cairns Northern Beaches
I have been keeping a daily watch at a very small grove of 3 heavily fruiting fig trees just 70mtrs from where I live, with plenty of Barred Cuckoo-shrikes present every time visited in last 2 weeks - highest count was 17 birds in the trees at any one time. What is of interest is that 3 of these birds were each in different stages of immature plumage (a pic of a handsome adult is attached). Unfortunately, no juveniles have yet been seen at this spot, or anywhere else around Cairns by me for that matter. If anyone sees any young birds of this species around Cairns that are in juvenile plumage (NOT immature), then I will be very interested to hear from them via my email Lots of Pied Imperial-Pigeons are around now, with my first birds of season arriving here on 30/07/11.

Latham's Snipe Cattle Creek, 10km south of Ingham
Pair in luxuriant weed and mud on eastern side of Bruce Highway at Cattle Creek bridge. First seen this season, usually nearer Aug 1. Ditto Metallic Starlings around Ingham, just turning up. And no Torres Strait Pigeons yet. Also more usually Aug 1. Warning: alert croc(s) in Cattle Creek!

Red-necked Crake Mt. Whitfield, Cairns
1 bird seen at 5:30pm during exercise rush hour. The bird was on the Red arrow track just past the Cassowary sign, within 2m of the path. Crossed the path and headed downhill.

Tue 16 Aug Lovely Fairy-Wren Daintree Village - track above the Water Tower
This site proved itself yet again. Two pairs were seen near the top of the track playing "chase-me". Good views even though they hardly stop moving.

Being attacked by the usual suspects.

Thu 11 Aug Black Bittern Wetlands in Mareeba
Accessed from Keeble St. Saw the Bittern with Willie (Wagtail)'s assistance pointing it out. He wasn't very happy it was around! The bird was moving through the treetops along the creek. Considered myself very lucky as only stopped as I was lost!

Mon 8 Aug Double eyed fig parrot (race macleayana) Cairns boardwalk near scake board ramp
Whilst walking along The Esplande in Cairns for a recent break from Melbourne weather, we sighted several times two birds here. Another new species for our list!

Mon 18 Jul Purple-crowned Fairy-wren, Little Woodswallow, Sandstone Shrike-thrush, Buff-sided Robin Lawn Hill Gorge, Boodjamulla NP
Purple-crowned Fairy-wren Little Woodswallow Sandstone Shrike-thrush Buff-sided Robin Great views of a very friendly Sandstone Shrike-thrush on the cliff walk to Duwadarri Lookout. Good sitings of the other species. The only place we saw Little Woodswallows over 11 days in the lower Gulf/Outback Queensland.
