Sun 7 Nov Grey Shrike-Thrush Private Property Smiths Rd Parwan
A pair of Grey Shrike-Thrushes being very vocal on my friend's property at Parwan. Birds observed in a stand of Grey Box near their dwelling.

Sat 6 Nov Masked Lapwing, Olive-backed Oriole Upper Yarra Reservoir

Male still present (16:15-17:30) as previously reported by others. Sighted at several locations beside Yarra River from just upstream of Victoria St bridge, near where boats are moored, to where powerlines cross the river before the Bridge Rd bridge. Great views obtained while the bird was mobbed by Noisy Miners and Red Wattlebirds.

White-headed Pigeon "Forest Park" Orbost
Prior to an early morning "Breakfast with the Birds" hosted by the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, most participants obtained good views of an adult White-headed Pigeon that circled around the trees bordering this parkland.

Fri 5 Nov Dollarbird Springs Road Brown Hill (Ballarat)
First sighted by Murray Grant on his early morning bike ride along Springs Rd. and reported to other Birdo's in Ballarat. Attached photo taken Sunday morning 7/11/2010. First sighting of this bird in Ballarat nearest previous sighting Clunes.

White-throated Nightjar Bunyip State Park
A Nighjar turned up at the Helipad off the Black Snake Creek Rd at about 8.30pm and was still hawking around the open area until it became too dark to be seen.

Hawking dragonflies from powerlines.The closest record to Ballarat city ever.Tall eucalypts along a small watercourse provided excellent ''Roller''habitat.

Bird is pretty easy to find with its loud, strident call. Flew from upstream of the bridge to perhaps 100 downstream.

Thu 4 Nov Cox's Sandpiper Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
Cox's Sandpiper Feeding with a handful of Curlew Sandpipers & numerous Red-necked Stints on the Bay shoreline between the Beach road rocks & Beacon Point at approx. 1610 hours - a dropping tide. It's been quite some time since one of these curiosities has been recorded.

Wed 3 Nov Tawny Frogmouth Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne
Tawny Frogmouth calling in broad daylight at lunch time today in Fitzroy Gardens. First heard then spotted in first oak tree above the cafe. They are a regular (and breeding) species around my garden in Donvale, but never heard them call in broad daylight.

Tue 2 Nov Mallee Emu-wren, Striated Grass-wren, Chestnut Quail-thrush Hattah National Park
Mallee Emu-wrens initially heard from car in patch of mallee & spinifex north of Hattah township on track veering north-west, just past plains. Easily found & seen, but buggers to photograph because of the very tall, seeding spinifex, often head high. Observed for about an hour & a half, with OK photos in the end. Striated Grass-wrens also easily found early in the morning on the Norwingi track, just off the Old Calder Highway. Also Chestnut Quail-thrush heard singing in same area.

Typical staccato piping call heard then single bird seen flying south, at about 30 metres high, from Adobe Flats, Karbeethong Avenue at 07:00. Late mainland date - species normally in Tasmania by now.

Two male Superb Parrots along Yielima North Rd and a group of over 14 Superb Parrots along Lancaster Rd. Also a Noisy Friarbird, Yellow Rosella and a Peregrine Falcon. Note: Barmah State Forest is still closed & very wet!

First time a Dollar Bird has been observed after 17 years of taking notes of birds in the area. Also noted 2 Sacred Kingfishers in Oct. - first ones seen in area since the Feb. 09 Bushfire.

Dark phase bird seen on rocks. Apparently regular at this location but is first time i have encountered this species in Victoria.

Brilliant views of a pair of Masked Owl at the edge of State Forest near Cape Conran Coastal Park. One light phase individual and one intermediate individual. Seen at the interface of heath, tall forest and private land.

Dollarbird, Rainbow Bee-eater Mahon Lane, Osbornes Flat
It continues to be an excellent birding spring in Yackandandah. My first Dollarbird for the house block this morning, with a pair of Rainbow Bee-eater just up the road. Rufous Songlark have arrived on the property (at least 2 birds), and Fantail, Horsfields and Shining-bronze Cuckoo continue to call most mornings.

White-throated Gerygone Wodonga Senior Secondary College
I was surprised to locate a gerygone in claret ash on the school grounds this morning. Not exactly ideal habitat, yet singing quite happily.

Bush Stone-curlew, Intermediate Egret, Nankeen Night Heron, Rainbow Bee-eater, White-winged Triller Dowdle Swamp
Bush Stone-curlew seen in the same vicinity as previous visits. A good number of Intermediate Egret observed (5), one with a red bill. One Nankeen Night heron flushed from a red gum while wading through the swamp. Rainbow Bee-eaters have returned and a male White-winged Triller, very scarce this spring, sing from sapling gums.

Sun 31 Oct Mallee Emu-wren, Striated Grasswren Nowingi Track, Hattah National Park
A great, if damp, morning along Nowingi Track with two Striated Grasswrens just south of the Konardin Track intersection and a group of 6 Mallee Emu-wrens a few hundred metres north of the intersection. Four Pink Cockatoos flying over. A family of Chestnut-crowned Babblers near the north end of the track along with a single White-browed Woodswallow. Red-backed Kingfisher west of Colignan township which is just north of the park. Great to see so much water in the landscape.

Eastern Bristlebird Howe Flat, Mallacoota
Bristlebirds were vocal and sighted close to walkway from Howe Flat track. Many Scarlet Honeyeaters present. Single Beautiful Firetail and White-throated Nightjar recorded in woodland area.

Hardhead, Blue-billed Duck Ballarat
Hardhead: female amongst many pacific black ducks and chicks (1). Blue-billed Duck: male and female with five chicks (7). Observed at Lake Wendouree, Ballarat. Good depth of water in lake, water plants plentiful and verdant. Observed lone mature female Hardhead duck 31 Nov, amongst large number of Pacific Black duck and ducklings, southern end of 'fairyland'. Returned the next day to investigate report of Bluebill duck: located male and female Bluebill with five duckling/chicks, in sheltered lagoon - northern section of 'fairyland'.

Painted Honeyeater, Western Gerygone, White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Rufous Songlark Kerang Weir, Kerang
At least 2 Painted Honeyeaters calling near the bridge at Kerang Weir after a night of solid rain. Also good to hear a Rufous Songlark in full voice as well as Western Gerygone, Little Friarbird and a couple of White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike. Several nesting spp including White-breasted Woodswallow, Fairy Martin and Sacred Kingfisher.

Square-tailed Kite: Seen over main road into Mallacoota just outside town. Later over Watertrust Road . Australian Koel: At least 2 birds calling incessantly. One male bird tracked down pre-dawn on Sunday.

Two Powerful Owls in a large Eucalyptus near the railway line. I think they were both juveniles but it was difficult to tell as the rain made it difficult to see clearly
