The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period
Monday, June 7, 2010 to Sunday, June 13, 2010:
Area: SA
Date: Saturday, June 5, 2010
Location: Loxton
Western Gerygone (Gerygone fusca) (1) Alerted by its typical Gerygone call I
found a Western Gerygone halfway along the Loxton Nature trail moving about the
Blax Box trees. Pictures taken. Quite unusual for this area although a nesting
pair was discovered by a local birder at Katarapko NP (20 km from Loxton) in
November 2005.

Date: Sunday, June 6, 2010
Location: On our property at Rockleigh
Bluebonnet (Northiella haematogaster) (4) The bluebonnets are occasional
visitors and it was nice to see 4 together
Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) (2) The swallows have managed to raise more
young in an old round rainwater tank lying on its side. The nest is perched
precariously on a small piece of iron bent into the tank. The tank was damaged
when it broke its moorings in a gale-force wind and rolled over rocks. One baby
either fledged on Sunday when we first saw it, or not long before. It was an
inept flier, and landed on the ground, then on a brick patio, then in the
middle of a leafy gum tree. Its short tail was rounded with no sign of a fork.
By yesterday (Tuesday) it was flying more successfully, had a fork in its tail,
and was being fed in mid-air by an adult. Squeaks were often audible in the
tank, where a baby was seen sitting on the nest, but we don't know whether this
is another youngster or the one we have seen in the air. Do all chicks fledge
at the same time, or can this happen over a period of days ?

Date: Thursday, June 10, 2010
Location: Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, South Coast Road, adjacent
Flinders Chase National Park
Gang-gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum) (1) Gang-gangs were introduced
into Flinders Chase in the late 1920's or early 1930's and a small population
has remained. Usual sightings have been in the north of the park around the
Ravine des Casoars however 2 were seen feeding in stringybarks in the courtyard
of the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat. On enquiring with the staff there
have been a group of 6 in the immediate area for the past 6 weeks or so. Their
presence out of their "normal" range may be the result of the large fire which
burned through the Ravine in December 2007.
