Published sightings for the week ending 2 May 2010.
Sun 2 May Pacific Baza, Regent Bowerbird, Topknot Pigeon Ourimbah,
Tuggerah & Chittaway
A combined outing with the Cumberland BOC & Birding NSW saw 37 birders
visit Ourimbah Ck RTA Res, Pioneer Dairy Wetlands, Tuggerah STW and
Chittaway Point. Highlights were 27 Topknot Pigeons, a group of 7
Pacific Bazas, calling and displaying together & an adult male Regent
Bowerbird posing on a dead tree at Ourimbah Ck Res; Sea-Eagle, Hobby,
Grey Goshawk, Whistling Kite, Swamp Harrier, Wedge-tailed Eagle,
Black-shouldered Kite and Kestrel at the Pioneer Dairy Wetlands;
Shovelers, Black-winged Stilts and Hardhead at Tuggerah STW; and Caspian
Tern, Little Egret, Tawny Frogmouth & Bar-tailed Godwits at Chittaway.
95 species for the day.

Ground Parrot Barren Grounds Nature Reserve
One bird flushed from the side of the service track (towards the end) at
1pm. Exciting new sighting for me after dozens of attempts. Male
Southern Emu-wren also seen at the same location.

Sat 1 May Wedge-tailed Eagle Castlereagh Nature Reserve
Two wedge tailed eagles circling overhead at around 11:20 AM. Having not
seen them in the Sydney basin before I was doubting my eyes - despite
the very distinctive tail and wing features. A displeased Australian
Raven moved them on, which made for great size comparison and removed my
doubts.

Painted Button-quail Red Hill in the Cromer-Beaconhill area,
Northern suburbs of Sydney
Not sure if this is rare or not: I saw three Painted Button-quail at
about 2:15pm today on the gravel road/track about 100m from the main
road (Lady Penrhyn Rd). They were just walking and foraging along the
edge of the track. Watched them for about 10 minutes. Definite red eyes
and yellow legs. [Moderator's Note: Although not a rare species, this is
a very good record in Sydney's Northern suburbs. MC]

Thu 29 Apr Glossy Black-Cockatoo Goobang National Park - near
Gingham Gap
At 4.45 pm, 5 Glossies seen coming in to drink at puddle in track on S
side of Peak Hill Baldry Road. Several others heard. Ironbarks flowering
(but not in N tip of park), with lots of Noisy Friarbirds and Red
Wattlebirds, but smaller numbers of other honeyeaters.

Plumed Whistling-Duck Tomingley West Silo - NW of Parkes
1 adult and 9 juveniles in 'wetland' between roads to silo. Several rain
events in recent months have probably kept water in the pond.

Regent Honeyeater Putty Road (update)
A total of 12 Regents seen today at the Putty Rd site at Milbrodale. At
one stage 11 birds were gathered in a small wattle tree near a small
dam, before flying up to the road to feed on lerp (despite the fact that
there is blossom in the trees). Also Painted Button and Brown Quails in
the grass on the opposite side of the road. Lots of Striped HE's too.

Wed 28 Apr Barking Owl Near Big Yango (Yengo NP)
A single Barking Owl seen and a second bird heard from a distance away.
Birds were recorded at this location in 2005. No other nocturnal birds
seen or heard here or elsewhere in the park.

Black-necked Stork Wetland on northern edge of Geneva, Kyogle,
nthn NSW
A single sub-adult (some brown feathers still apparent) seen resting at
the edge of a shallow lagoon. Numerous Black Duck also present.

Flame Robin, Olive Whistler Poleblue Swamp, Barrington Tops NP,
Gloucester shire
Flame Robins were everywhere today around the camp area & the immediate
environs of Poleblue Swamp, adult males (picture attached) seemingly
outnumbering brown birds by more than 3 to 1. At Easter this year,
Warren Brown reported to Birdline that Flame Robins were abundant at
nearby Little Murray camp area, so good to know that they are still in
very good numbers in this general area. There were at least 50
individuals around the swamp today. I was surprised to hear & then see
an Olive Whistler near the swamp in a thicket - it must have come down
along one of the heavily vegetated gullies toward the swamp from the
beech forests above. The only other highlight really was that
White-throated Nightjars called often through the cold clear moonlit
night.

Wedge-tailed Eagle Blair Athol (adjacent to Campbelltown)
Two birds soaring on the northern side of Narellan Rd., near the M5
turn-off, mid-afternoon.

Tue 27 Apr Wompoo Fruit-Dove, Rose Robin Copeland SCA, near
Barrington & Gloucester
2 Wompoo Fruit-Doves were sighted at 12:30pm today at Copeland Tops SCA,
one was an immature bird (very dodgey picture attached). A single male
Rose Robin was also seen here, together with the expected
Yellow-throated Scrubwren, Green Catbird, Brown Cukoo-Dove, Pale Yellow
Robin, Satin Bowerbird etc...Unfortunately, I was looking to get some
shots of Russet-tailed Thrush but they didn't show for me in the short
space of time that I was there.

Birds seen along the Dumaresq river 70kms west of Tenterfield

Green Catbird Challenger Track, Kuringai Chase NP
Heard it's call about 15 times on the right side of the track very close
to the end. It was too far in to go and find.

Sun 25 Apr Swift Parrots Crowdy Bay N.P. Camping Ground
3 Swift Parrots seen coming out of a Banksia integrifolia. Not seen
again.

Sat 24 Apr New Zealand Storm-Petrel SOSSA Wollongong pelagic
A single storm-petrel appearing to satisfy the key diagnostics to be a
very likely New Zealand Storm-Petrel, made 2 quick passes by the boat
today off Wollongong. Picture attached taken by Raja Stephensen - images
of this particular bird can be seen on the link below labelled as #16,
#17, & #18 in the storm-petrel gallery. It does not appear to be either
a White- or Black-bellied Storm-Petrel, as it did not show the belly
pattern of a Black-bellied nor the structure of a White-bellied. This
individual very closely resembles the bird seen off Port Stephens last
month.

Spotted Harrier juvenile mulgoa valley
Juvenile Spotted Harrier flushed from paddock, flew into and perched in
large eucalypt then flew off. Buff coloured rump with no contrast to
back or tail. Swamp Harriers occur here every year or so, Spotted very
unusual.

Fri 23 Apr Flame & Scarlet Robins The Verdon HSD, 7km NE Nundle
On a visit to the property "The Verdon" Nundle which is located close to
Nundle State Forest, members of the CCGBNSW saw both Scarlet and Flame
Robins in the woodland and in the pine forests nearby. Also present were
Varied Sittellas, Little Lorikeet, Brown Treecreeper, Southern Boobook,
Dusky Woodswallows and Wedge-tailed Eagles

White-backed Swallow and Plum-headed Finch Chaffey Dam near
Nundle
During a camp-out at Nundle by members of the Central Coast Group of
Birding NSW, on a visit to Chaffey Dam, a group of 4 Plum-headed Finches
and 6 White-backed Swallows were seen below the dam wall. On the dam
were nesting Great-crested Grebes.
