Published sightings for the week ending 25 Apr 2010.

Sat 24 Apr Spangled Drongo Sugarloaf Point
Spangled Drongo still at Sugarloaf Pt. Sighted between 1:45 and 2:30PM.
Also saw a female Golden Whistler which is my first record here in about
10 visits since mid Feb.
Dena Paris

Fri 23 Apr Singing Honeyeater Durridgere Road Northeast of Ulan
A pair of Singing Honeyeaters feeding two dependent young today on a
ridge approximately 8.5km along Durridgere Road Northeast of Ulan. Adult
birds noted carrying captured invertebrates to two other birds, which
were giving repeated plaintive single syllabic calls. The site is an
open shrubby woodland characterised by shrubs, Cypress Pines and Acacias
carrying mistletoe (S honeyeaters noted feeding upon). Styphelia shrub
is also flowering well and offering potential forage for honeyeaters. A
somwhat rarely observed species in the Hunter Region, particularly in,
what appears to be, the tail end of a pair's breeding cycle.
Allan Richardson

        Regent Honeyeater Putty Road, Milbrodale
3, possibly 4 Regents seen today along the roadside on the Putty Road,
about 2km south of the Milbrodale Rd turn-off. They were in Ironbarks
with a small amount of blossom, but that have a bit of bud so could
produce more productive blossom. 2 birds were interacting as if they
were a pair. There must've 30 Striped HE within 100m of the Regents.
100's (probably 1000+) of Yellow-faceds migrating. Also Spiny-cheeked HE
in several places including a road-killed bird along Milbrodale Rd.
Mick Roderick

Thu 22 Apr Barking Owl Silverdale
I am reporting on behalf of a friend who owns a property in Silverdale.
Tonight she heard the distinct barking calls of a Barking Owl. When she
played a call back to the owl it responded. This also confirms me having
heard the screaming woman call emitted once on the night of March 27 on
the same property. The friend has also been hearing the owl(s) before
the date that I had reported.
Ákos Lumnitzer

        Albatross sp. Long Reef
No sign of the Osprey or any noddies, but two Ruddy turnstones (one in
breeding plumage, one not), many Red-necked Stints, four Grey-tailed
Tattlers and six or seven Sooty Oystercatchers. Admittedly, I didn't see
the advice Roger posted about access in March and April, but there were
quite a few other people around, so it might need a bigger sign... From
the car park to the north, there was one albatross some way out. From
the wingshape, scale against a Silver Gull and the amount of yellow beak
visible, I'd hazard a stab at Black-browed.
Tony Keene

Spangled Drongo Sugarloaf Point, Hunters Hill/East Ryde
One bird was happily hunting flies this afternoon.
Fatih Sam

        White-fronted Tern Long Reef
No Black Noddy seen but the first White-fronted Tern of the season in
Sydney as far as I am aware. Incidentally, I didn't go onto the rock
platform at Long Reef since there is a notice specifically asking people
not to do so during March and April to avoid disturbance to migratory
shorebirds.
Roger McGovern

Wed 21 Apr Musk and Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, Brown Goshwak and
White-bellied Sea-Eagle Manly Selective Campus
All these species flying over the school in the one day!
Henry Coleman

Spangled Drongo Angophora Reserve, Bilgola Plateau
So many Drongos around lately! I've seen 3 on the Northern Beaches in
the last 4 weeks. Before this month, I had only seen them in this area
once. This one was being harrassed by Noisy Miners.
Henry Coleman

Tue 20 Apr Square-tailed Kite, Turquoise Parrot, Diamond Firetails,
Brown Treecreepers Gulf Road, north of Emmaville
Single bird observed hunting over woodland and along river. 6 Turquoise
Parrots observed in same area and are relatively common in local area.
David Charley

Black-chinned Honeyeater, Speckled Warbler, Diamond Firetail,
Dusky Woodswallow, Brown Treecreeper Approximately 25km south east of
Bonshaw
Three pairs of Speckled Warbler were observed within an area of 3ha and
were found to be relatively common in suitable habitat in the region; 6
Black-chinned Honeyeaters observed feeding in flowering White Box; 4
Diamond Firetails at site and common in region with nesting pairs
observed in local area; Brown Treecreepers common in suitable habitat.
David Charley

        Little Lorikeet Chiltern Trail, Ingleside
Small flocks continuously flying over before 7:30am. I am not sure that
this is unusual, but I have never seen them here before, and only ever
once before on the Northern Beaches.
Henry Coleman

Mon 19 Apr Grey Falcon Fivebough Swamp, Leeton

Australian Owlet Nightjar, Tawny Frogmouth Mitchell Park,
Cattai, NSW
While spotlighting last night, we heard at least three Nightjars and
discovered one at almost head height just off the main track. Also a
Tawny Frogmouth near the study center.
Ákos Lumnitzer and Alex Zografos

Glossy Black-Cockatoo Nords Wharf Rd, Nords Wharf, Lake
Macquarie
A lone adult male Glossy flew over my palce tonight at 5:30pm, heading
SW paralleling the shoreline. He was calling as he flew toward me &
again once overhead & then beyond as well, but there were no other birds
heard or seen. First record here of this species since early Feb this
year.
Martin Cachard

Black Noddy, Osprey Long Reef, Sydney's Northern Beaches
The Black Noddy is STILL at Long Reef, posing very nicely for some
photos this afternoon. There was also an Osprey on the rockshelf, moving
the the southern side after being chased by children and flying off
after a few minutes. No Common Noddy.
Joshua Bergmark, Henry Coleman and Nathan Ruser

        Bar-shouldered Dove Chiltern Trail, Ingleside
Two Bar-shoulded Doves were at the Chiltern Trail this morning, Henry
seeing them before I arrived and both of us hearing them later in the
walk. Also around were many Brown-headed Honeyeaters and a male Scarlet
Honeyeater. (Moderator's Note: As this is a regular site for
Bar-shouldered Doves, a species gradually extending its range south aong
the NSW Coast, it can no longer be considered "unusual" at this site
Joshua Bergmark and Henry Coleman

Sun 18 Apr Grey Falcon Fivebough Swamp, Leeton
Single bird seen and photographed at Fivebough Swamp, Leeton
Troy Mutton

Sat 17 Apr Radjah Shelduck (update from previous reports) River
Park, cnr Pacific Hwy and Stroud St, Buladelah
On a busy Saturday afternoon, with lots of people picnicking in the park
by the Myall River, a single Radjah Shelduck was wandering about,
apparently unfazed by the proximity of picnickers, boisterous children,
and some rather territorial domestic geese.
Kevin & Ben Barker

Pale-headed Rosella Port Macquarie, NSW (400 meters west of the
base hospital)
I noticed a pair last weekend for the first time in the neighbours
backyard trees, they flew off in the direction of Kingfisher Drive. An
individual bird was feeding on my lawn this morning. No sign of the
other one today. [Moderator's Note: this record is well out of the usual
range for this species. It is likely the birds are escapees. MC]
Ian Colley

Tue 13 Apr Masked Owl Scheyville National Park
Two birds calling and one bird seen hunting at the edge of the gum tree
line where it took a rabbit. There were also couple of Sothern Boobooks
and Tawny Frogmouths. (Moderators Note: This is a rare record for the
County of Cumberland)
