Alan Stuart was the poster of that message and the Hunter BOC organiser of the
surveys, which have been conducted with the local NPWS and Marine Park
Authority for a few years now. As we speak Alan is en-route to Melaleuca,
Tassie. I'm sure he'd be able to elaborate once he returns next week.
The surveys cover a huge area of Port Stephens and require a great deal of
organisation. Much of the surveys are carried out in boats, as there is plenty
of wader habitat in the port that is not accessible by land. The key outcome of
these surveys has been the number of Pied Oystercatchers. Last week, the NSW
Scientific Committee upgraded their conservation status in NSW from Vulnerable
to Endangered and with 144 counted in Port Stephens this represents about half
of the NSW population estimate (that is, using the references cited by the
Scientific Committee which could be wrong).
Incidentally, on the same day as the Pied Oyc was upgraded to Endangered, the
NSW Scientific Committee made final determinations to list another 5 species as
Vulnerable in NSW. These are Varied Sitella, Flame Robin, Scarlet Robin,
Spotted Harrier and Little Eagle. For full details see:

Interestingly, White-browed Woodswallow was preliminarily listed at the same
time as the above 5 species but didn not get the final determination.

I saw the following in the Birdline NSW update today - is there a more fulsome
report of what species were seen and where - possibly from the poster of that
report or the Hunter Bird Observers?

Fri 12 Feb Pied Oystercatcher Port Stephens 144 Pied Oystercatchers were
recorded in a survey of all of Port Stephens; also 876 Bar-tailed Godwits, 376
Eastern Curlew, 271 Whimbrel, 10 other wader species, 20+ other waterbirds;
4,000 birds all up. The survey was by members of Hunter Bird Observers Club in
collaboration with the local NPWS and the Port Stephens Marine Park Authority.
