Is the inability to run the GPS program in the background a general iPhone 
thing, or does it only apply to that program?  Blackberries seem to be able to 
run anything in the background.

Blackberry GPS has the same tendency to be too unresponsive for driving 
navigation. I assume that whenever these devices can't get a satellite fix they 
simply wait for one, whereas proper satnavs can revert to a form of dead 
reckoning between fixes.
