I use an iPhone, and BirdsightAU. Battery life isn't quite as good on
the iPhone as my old Nokia N70, but the iPhone does everything else
much better and far more easily.
I have a second battery (it's a little plugin thing - iPhones don't
have a removable battery) and you can get all sorts of solar chargers
or ones that that charge from a couple of AA batteries. I think most
other phones have the same sort of choices.
As for recording, I don't think you would get very satisfactory
results from the inbuilt mic. It's designed for voice at a reasonably
close range. My advice would be to investigate portable digital
recorders. I've used both the Zoom 2 and Zoom H4 and they produce good
results. I think some professional sound recordists use the H4, but
coupled to a pro mic.
