Panasonic Lumix cameras have a good reputation and very good lenses (made by
Leica) and several have zoom up to 12x, which means effectively the same as
a 400mm lens. The FZ50 is a great camera - I have a FZ30, its predecessor,
that I used extensively and happily before getting a digital SLR and I was
very pleased with it. A good birding friend has the FZ50 which she was also
very happy with.

To save some money, you could look on eBay for someone like us who had such
a camera and upgraded to a digital SLR.

Hi

Does anyone have advice on a basic (not SLR) camera that can be used for
simple records of sightings? I notice there are cameras with 12x and even
20x optical zoom but most of these are wide angle (which seems to defeat the
purpose). Any clues on the best option for the sort of thing I am looking
for? Much appreciated if you can help.

Cheers
