Male vs female calls of Sacred Kingfisher and Southern Boobook

G'day All

I know that there is a sexual difference in the calls of the Common  
Swift.  It takes some practice to pick the difference up, but it  
helps birds that nest in dark locations to correctly ID the sex of  
the bird already in the nest site.  In swifts unattached birds bang  
their wings on the outside of the nest site to elicit a vocal  
response and it lets them know whether the site is occupied by male,  
female of both.  If both, they move on to look elsewhere for a mate.
Kingfishers nest in dark hollows but do a lot of their calling from  
exposed branches so I do not know if the same principles will apply -  
but worth considering.  Maybe they are just advertising their sex &  
location or vocally defending their territory.
