Anthea,
I have been hearing a similair sounding call, also in the pre-dawn, and during day as well. The call I hear is of only two to three seconds duration,a single note which does descend, though not by a great amount (as the call is of such short duration). So I checked my BOCA tapes, and there it is, the non-trilling call of the Fan-tailed Cuckoo. After hearing the tape and going back outside to once again try and find the bird, TWO Fan-tailed Cuckoos left the same tree together. They hadn't once done their downward trill, and I wondered whether this short, single note was serving some other purpose. ?contact ?courtship.
