M Durno Murray died suddenly in April this year. Some will remember his
contributions to ornithology; a range of scientific papers on silver gulls,
crested terns, wandering albatross, or his editing "Corella", his contributions
to the Seabird Island Series. I remember his ever generous enthusiasm and
support to me for over fifty years.
Durno's scientific papers which also included Robert Carrick's royal penguin,
Australian Magpie have been distributed to scientific organisations. The
Australian Antarctic Division is curating the Macquarie Island Royal penguin
and other Macquarie Island records. NSW NP are to look after the crested tern
and gull data. The Australian Bird Banding Scheme is caring for the Australian
Magpie records. The avian ectoparasite collections are with the CSIRO Division
of Entomology.
The intention is to catalogue the Sub Antarctic papers and evaluate how the
data might best be included into the Antarctic Division's databases and
published. Eric Woehler, Ian West and myself with the AAD's staff expect to
make the catalogue. Durno's family hope that those who collected many of these
data might express their interest and help in this process.
