Murray,

Currently SASOL Birds of Southern Africa is probably the best field guide.
Ken Newman's used to be the best, but these days this field guide is a bit
dated and the illustrations are not as good as the SASOL field guide.

If you are going north of the Zambezi river, then Birds of Africa by Ian
Sinclair & Peter Ryan is excellent. Nice book to have anyway.

The South African Birdfinder by Callen Cohen etc. is an excellent guide on
where and what to see.

If you are in Gauteng area (Jhb/Pta) only then there is a new book out which
I don't have yet which is the Chamberlain Birding Guide to Gauteng. Have a
look at http://www.birding.co.za/

Best to have a look at Jhb airport or at any major shopping centre for the
field guide which suits you best. Certainly cheaper than importing a book.

Regards,

Bruce

G'day Alll,

another one of those typical questions to the group-;

what is the best bird guide to get for a vacation to southern africa?

comments welcome

Cheers,
