Agreed. Sinclair, Hockey, Tarboton is as good as any and better than
some. I'd recommend picking it up before you leave. When you get
there, if you're in a major city, check the local bookstores and you
should find several other choices. I expected to pick up another one
or two of the major guides but ended up sticking with Sinclair...it
was plenty for a limited trip. A couple of other things worth
considering:
* Guy GIbbons has a series of DVDs of southern african birds, which
can be a help if you want to get used to the unfamiliar families
before you go.
* SASOL publishes a book by Alan & Meg Kemp called "Birds of Prey of
Africa and its Islands" that's pretty fantastic. I'd look for it
there, if you're interested.
* SASOL also publishes a site-finding guide + map that's pretty
indispensable if you are sorting out an itinerary. Check for "Southern
African Birdfinder" by Cohen, Spottiswoode, and Rossouw.
* There's a pair of books specifically for Kruger that are worth
having if you're going there. Try for the "Prime Origins Guide to
Exploring Kruger" - there's also a birding one. Which, as it turned
out, we used less. The book is by Hlton-Barber and Berger.
There are several other good resources, depending on what kind of trip
you're aiming at and where you'll be in the country. If you want more
details or tips, feel free to write with a question and more details
about your plans. There's also a very active birding list that is
populated by South African birders. They're overwhelmingly helpful in
response to questions.
Have a great trip!
