Just to add my personal comment, rather than with my moderator hat on:

We are facing the prospect of being locked out of all Cheetham sites, and most likely all the South Australian ones, because the owners are concerned about birders not observing all their safety protocols, and thereby exposing the company to legal action. Quite a few property owners have refused access for birders because of the actions of a small number of irresponsible visitors.

I'm in no way suggesting that Alex or anyone else on this forum is irresponsible when visiting private property, but please remember that access is a very delicate issue in many places. We all need to be careful not to do anything - or even SAY anything - that might get property owners offside about allowing birders to go on their property.

Now with the moderator hat on: I think this topic is closed unless new information comes to light.

Thanks everyone

Gee .. how to win friends and influence people eh!

How insulting of you to urge Chris to get out of his comfort zone and help the community! I think that Chris has indeed helped the COMMUNITY Alex. He has obviously put alot of effort into gaining access to an area and building a relationship so that he can do regular wader counts. This surveys are very valuable to the birding community and organisations such as the BA Atlas. Reporting a rarity and getting great photos of the bird also helps the COMMUNITY. Birding-Aus is part of the community too and i have enjoyed immensely hearing about the bird and seeing the photos! If you really cared about helping the community why do you only want BARC to be told about it! Face it, Chris' efforts ARE benefiting the community - Just not you PERSONALLY!

He also already hinted that he is trying to see what he can do to gain further access. I'm sure you're email will no doubt urge him on to call you personally as soon as this has been arranged. Wait by the phone!

Hi,

So correct me if I’m wrong, it’s a private property… (Like many where other twtichable rarities show up) and you just don’t want to bother the owner….

Ok, I just not sure that you don’t get pleasure from gripping off others… If you didn’t you would get out of you comfort zone and help the community.

If you don’t want us to see it, next time there is no need to report to everyone in the list with pictures, etc… only the rarities committee should know.

I usually a very friendly guy, but lifers are hard to come by this days, and when a duffer it’s showing off that he saw the third or fourth record of a BBS in Australia, posting pictures and a note: “by the way folks, I’m the only one allowed to see it, please don’t ask me where I saw it”. It’s kind of upsetting.

Regards,
Alex

Thanks Chris,

I was wondering how to tackle this inevitable debate. It’s not a military area but access to the site is for surveys only at this stage & carry strict regulations. No viewing areas from public roads exist. As one who has gained the trust of the folk who run it, I am not willing to compromise this. At this stage no access will be allowed during the working week. If there is the possibility of getting in later, I will let everyone know when & if I get the go ahead. I don’t get pleasure from gripping off others & would love everyone who wants to see this bird have a chance at it. It is a wader tho & at this time of year anything could happen.

Apologies for the anguish this might cause. I know how I’d feel if it were a Nordmann’s Greenshank! I did think twice about reporting it for this reason but suppressing it wouldn’t have been looked kindly upon either.

Cheers,

Chris.

Alex,

My guess is that Chris has been granted permission to access a sensitive area (military perhaps?) that no one else is likely to be granted access to for any reason. Knowing where the bird is would only tempt people to break in so why give them that temptation?

Chris

Hi all,

This morning had a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in Bundaberg (SEQld) for 2.5 hrs with Nev Cap ell whilst doing a regular count. It was eventually put off by a sea-eagle & has not been seen since. Unfortunately the area has restricted access & the bird will not be twitchable so please don't ask
me for specific site details.

Chris
