SEQ birders may be familiar with the swamp on the side road just off
the highway at Minden. Recent rains in the Lockyer Valley have
resulted in thousands of Cattle Egrets nesting in the tall gums at the
rear of the swamp, large numbers ( perhaps a couple of hundred) of
nesting Royal Spoonbills, numerous Little Black Cormorants nesting and
many White Ibis. Small numbers of other species as well. Well worth a
look if you are passing by.
Interestingly I also went to Lake Gellatly at the Gatton Ag College
and there were fewer birds than I have ever seen there. Perhaps the
high water level is the result - I could not find the recently
reported Blue-billed Duck - has anyone else seen it? Three Wandering
Whistling-ducks, a handful of Plumed Whistling-ducks and a few Pink-
eared Ducks, Little Black and Little Pied Cormorants were about all
that was there.
cheers,
David Taylor
