Thermals and birds

Hi all,
While we were away the following question was posed:

When seen from below, which way do birds spiral around a thermal as they
rise? Do they spiral clockwise? Do they spiral anti-clockwise? Is it random?
Do thermals rotate or rise vertically with no rotation?

As we drove across the NSW plains I saw Masked Woodswallow, Black-shouldered
Kite, White-necked Heron and Whistling Kite all rising in thermals and the
majority of the birds were spiraling anti-clockwise. A few birds were rising
clockwise but the majority were not.
