When I am going off the beaten track I rent an EPIRB from my local 
hiking/camping store.  I pay an absolute pittance (on a daily rate) for the 
peace of mind it gives me.  

Remember that rentals have to be given a regular check over that they are still 
functioning, something that may not happen with one that you buy yourself and 
only use occasionally.

The new EPIRBs are around $500-$700. The best ones have built-in GPS that  will 
send the location of the beacon with the signal. The non-GPS ones  simply emit 
a signal that the satellite uses to locate the beacon. The  difference is the 
potential search area is smaller with the GPS-enabled  version.
