Last Thursday (26/6) while driving home along the M4 motorway at Penrith, west
of Sydney, I saw an Australian Hobby flying very fast, possibly hunting, at
5.20 pm. It was a little over 30 minutes after sundown, and the light levels
were very low, with only a faint glow in the west. The Hobby flew really close
to my car, about 20 metres away, so I am certain of the ID, very distinctive
wing shape and flight action. I was wondering if other people had seen hobbies
hunting so late into the evening.
On another note, the House Crow was at Dee Why this afternoon at about 4 pm, in
the Casuarina trees on the northern side of the car park. It's a fine looking
bird, in very fresh plumage.
