It is interesting that not only more than 2% of the UK population take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, but that the broadsheets publish
report forms and photos of the common birds

It would be an interesting exercise in public awareness raising to
have a similar national event in Aus.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

Up to half a million people are expected to take part in this year’s annual big Garden Birdwatch, a survey which helps conservationists to understand changing bird populations.
This year’s results will be particularly important as they will
provide a picture of the impacts of rising temperatures and a wet
summer last year.
The RSPB says it expects people to see more goldfinches because of the UK’s milder climate, but less blue tits, which have experienced their worst-ever breeding season.
The rules are simple – spend an hour on the weekend of the 26-27
January recording the birds that you see in your garden or local park. Note the highest number of each species, recording only those that you see at any one time, and only those that land, not the ones flying
over. Then fill in the online form, which you can find here.
