Dear All
Steve Murray raised the question of whether Cattle Egrets would have
spread so well without domesticated cattle. The range of habitats in
which I have seen them around the world would suggest to me that the
presence of cattle is a bonus.
Also Mike Carter said he saw a couple heading south, off Madagascar,
well they could have been heading off to the Prince Edward Islands
(nearly 47ªS) to the SE of the Cape of Good Hope where they are
regularly been sighted or even Macquarie Island where only corpses
have been found, so perhaps not so good a stop-off.
Being found on every continent except Antarctica, the Cattle Egret is
one of the worlds most successful birds when it comes to range
expansion, and most of it seems to have been done under its own steam.
Cheers,
