Peter,I counted 50+ Masked Lapwings at Big Swamp near Port Lincoln SA on Oct 27 last year. My wife and I remarked that we had never before seen such a concentration in one spot. Water level appeared high, although we were just visiting the area so have no idea what is usual for this imaginatively named wetland. BOM records show only 34 mm of rain for Port Lincoln in the preceding 2 months. The birds were mostly congregated on a couple of grassed areas adjacent to the open water of the lake/swamp. Roger. |
