Hi Martin,
Firstly, I agree very much with Michael Norris that your nocturnal
"cuckoo-like" call is probably a Boobook Owl.
For some good sites in the Springwood area my suggestions would include:
a) the Blue Gum Swamp walk - access from the end of White Cross Rd, Winmalee.
b) Long Angle Gully - follow the track from the end of Long Angle Rd
(off Singles Ridge Rd) - a little steep in parts.
c) Sun Valley - e.g. along the track from Rosenthal Lane.
d) Yellow Rock lookout for Rockwarbler and sometimes Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
Cheers,
Carol

We have been visiting Springwood in the Blue Mountains over the past
couple of weeks and are here for a few more days.
I wonder if locals could suggest a few locally productive sites.
Secondly, there is a bird here that makes a beautiful cuckoo call at night,
could anyone suggest what it might be, it often seems to start an hour after
dark and run into the middle of the night.
With thanks
Martin
