Dear All,
Not long before Christmas, there were some postings regarding the Howard and Moore web site http://birds-howardandmoore.org/. I have received an email from Edward Dickinson, the site moderator, outlining the time-line for the full operation of the site. Edward has kindly given me permission to forward his message to Birding-Aus.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

Dear Carl,

Someone kindly passed on your note on birding australia.

The website you found has not been announced yet so full marks to you for finding it. It is very much in the early stages of development. Here are some notes about it:

1. One files should be there in open access. One is Corrigenda 7 (just issued); as you probably know each issue of the Corrigenda picks up all the content of all the prior issues. The other 'freebie' is a list of descriptions new bird taxa known to us since we closed the books on H&M 3. I'm sorry that there is so little explanation on the opening page; this is because we are so very busy working on the database (this being necessary for the editing required to create the next edition), but also of course the site is not officially open. I do periodically, perhaps once a quarter, check to see who has visited the site and then send an e-mail to such individuals asking them for patience.

2. Most of the website will be 'private' for a year or two yet; the password protected parts will be used mainly for editing the text as we bring H&M 4 to a state of readiness.

3. Much of the book content of the 4th. edition, but not all, we expect to make available FOC on line, on the website you have found. This will not be before late 2009 and more likely in 2010. It is very unlikely that the open access content will include the footnote, the references, the introductory chapters or the appendices. However final decisions have not yet been made.

4. Amongst the protected parts of the website is included the on- line editing of the content of a companion book also to be published in 2009/2010; this deals with the dating of scientific names in ornithology.

I hope this clarifies things for you. If you have other questions you are welcome to e-mail me.

yours aye

Edward
