I was curious enough to Google and found Brushtail demography varies
through their range but typically mortality is very high among juvenile
Brushtails and low thereafter. In (pre-fox) Tasmania winter starvation
is suggested as the biggest cause of mortality in adults.

It is not impossible that the thornbill removed the fur from a sleeping
possum - I've had a White-Eared Honeyeater take hair from my head.
