In HBW, 7 races of the Black Kite, Milvus migrans, are listed. In 'Raptors of
the World' (Ferguson-Lees & Christie) it says that 12 races have been named
though no more than 8 are usually recognised, and they recognise only 6.
In both publications, only the race affinis is recorded in Australia.

Regards, Clive.

September 22, we observed a Black Kite in Alice Springs that phenotypically
looked perfect for a Black-eared Kite Milvus migrans lineatus: large pale Black
Kite with contrasting dark mask and ear coverts.
Is there anything known about its status in Australia?

Nikolas
