This thread throws up an interesting dilemma - knowing the good spots to go
is useful if one has limited time or a hard to find species in mind - but if
we all start to target specific areas, and just those specific areas because
they have a reputation, how many other potentially good spots will be lost
because there is no data for them at the time the site is under threat, so
there is nothing on which to base an argument?
So seek and use information on good places to visit by all means (and I
freely admit that I do), but also ensure you visit as many other places as
possible and submit it to some source or another (even if it's only a trip
report to Birding-Aus) - even if there is nothing there it could be useful
data.
Also, as one contributor to this thread observed, the birds aren't always in
the desired place, so looking elsewhere for them may turn up dividends
(think Grey Headed Lapwings and Red Legged Crakes.....)
