Heard a double yap four times about 9pm last night over the vacant land north
of Truganina Swamp in Altona, Victoria, about 10 or 20 seconds apart and moving
south.
It sounded like http://www.owlpages.com/sounds/Ninox-connivens-1.mp3 that Chris
Charles quoted in his Sydney report, only a little raspier. The spacing
between the yaps was like that. The last two calls were preceded by a softer
growl.
Is this possible around here? I've never heard one before, and only thought it
might be a Barking Owl because of the recent discussions here. I'll accept
that it could be something else, but not a dog. It was moving too fast over
the very rough ground for a dog, and it seemed to be coming from above ground
level. Not sure that I know what a fox sounds like, but it would have to be
really moving fast.
