Only one reply so far, perhaps not surprisingly, suggesting a fox. This
recording, http://www.angelfire.com/ar2/thefoxden/matingcall.wav sounds
reasonably close, although the first of the three notes wasn't as loud as on
this recording and was sometimes absent.

I initially thought it couldn't be an animal, as it was moving too fast. This
ground has been filled, and the piles of fill have never been smoothed out so
it's covered in hills and craters. I doubt a dog could move that fast through
it, but a fox, knowing it's own regular pathways, probably could.

I'm not 100% sure that recording is of a red fox, as it seems the owners of fox
websites feel no need to note the species of each track.

The person who suggested a fox mentioned that it was odd to have the initial
growl (which is more of a yap on this recording). Can anyone comment on that?

Heard a double yap four times about 9pm last night over the vacant land north
of Truganina Swamp in Altona, Victoria, about 10 or 20 seconds apart and moving
south.

It sounded like http://www.owlpages.com/sounds/Ninox-connivens-1.mp3 that Chris
Charles quoted in his Sydney report, only a little raspier. The spacing
between the yaps was like that. The last two calls were preceded by a softer
growl.

Is this possible around here? I've never heard one before, and only thought it
might be a Barking Owl because of the recent discussions here. I'll accept
that it could be something else, but not a dog. It was moving too fast over
the very rough ground for a dog, and it seemed to be coming from above ground
level. Not sure that I know what a fox sounds like, but it would have to be
really moving fast.
