Melbourne is a place that I always used to avoid as a young bushwalker
[because it is flat, flat, flat or nearly flat]. For me, Melbourne was
a place where you changed planes on your way to the Tasmanian highlands.
Anyhow, I happened to be in Melbourne last week for a geography
conference [I was presenting a paper on Aus twitchers], and had the
opportunity to go walkabout a couple of times. One afternoon, as I was
working my way out of Uni Melb, I came across a garden section that
contained a large number of Blackbirds [Melbourne is home to many
exotic species]. I noticed a bird in with the Blackbirds that looked
rather like a Song Thrush to me [it rather reminded me of the native
"Ground" thrush I often see here in hilly SEQ]. Pizzey & Knight don't
include an illustration of immature Blackbirds, so I was wondering if
it is likely that there are Common Blackbirds in immature plumage at
this time of year in Melbourne?
I must say that I saw hundreds of Blackbirds in Melbourne, and this was
the only one that looked like a Zoothera.
Regards, Laurie.
