Falklands Conservation is looking for a seabird observer to work on Albatross
and Petrel mitigation in the Falkland's trawl fisheries. The 12-month post,
based in Stanley, will involve long periods at sea on a variety of vessels. The
observer will gather data on the impact of fisheries on seabirds, study the
effectiveness of current mitigation devices, provide insights for practical
improvements, and give robust mortality estimates for all fisheries to update
National Plan of Action - Trawling.

A strong teamwork approach and experience of trawl fisheries is essential. A
relevant honours degree, at least 2 years experience of work at-sea, scientific
report writing, and an ability to speak Spanish are desirable.

The salary for this post is approximately £19,000 p.a. depending on experience
with an additional £20 a day seagoing allowance, and all travel costs to and
from the Falklands will be covered. The work is important in the global
conservation of seabird species, many of which occur both here and in
Australian waters.

If anybody on this list knows of interested persons in this position I would be
most grateful if they could pass on these details. Individuals wishing to apply
should send a cover letter and C.V. to Grant Munro:

Oh, and just for the record, there are quite a few of us Aussies in the
Falklands!
