I recognise your sightings in Mildura and SW NSW are unusual and that this
is one of the summers in which the Goulbourne valley orchardists have got
into the paper about Musk Lorikeets raiding their fruit.
However, on a quick look, this is not a special year for Musk Ls as viewed
from my part of Melbourne. And similarly for the month of May: in 1998,
2003 and 2004 - but not 2007 - there were relatively few records.
Currently not a bad, and not a good, year for Purple-crowned either.
But going further back, Pauline Reilly - formerly President of the RAOU and
a former resident of this area- wrote a foreword to the 1995 Bayside Birds
book saying what a surprise it was to see Musk Ls on a visit.
They have steadily become a lot more common here over the last 20 years,
probably as a result of planting streets with Australian - but not local -
gums like WA Flowering Gum (C. ficifolia), SA Yellow Gum (E leucoxylon)....
