A mate of mine wanted to see a Powerful Owl, so yesterday we went out
to JC Slaughter Falls [Mt Coot-tha, Brisbane]. We found one of the two
owls that have been regularly seen in the vicinity, and were quickly
joined by Chris Barnes. We all took plenty of photographs, from
several angles.
The bird in question was quite "puffed up", particularly around its
chest. The feature that took my attention, however, was its
particularly dark head and face - colourwise, rather like a dark morph
Wedge-tailed Eagle. It totally lacked the pale feathers I would have
expected to see on its forehead / between its eyes. In some respects,
this made the bird look more hawk-like.
It's plumage was also a bit thin around the base of its lower mandible,
so the yellow colour was readily apparent.

I would be interested in people's interpretation of this bird's plumage
- is it a youngish bird?
