Volunteer Fieldwork on Gouldian finches in the Kimberley


A research project currently on the breeding biology and ecology of the
Gouldian finch in the Kimberly region of northern Western Australia requires
an enthusiastic and capable field assistant.

The Gouldian finch is a highly endangered Australian bird, which inhabits
the tropical savannah of northern Australia. The project aims to investigate
the little-known aspects of this species¡¦ reproductive biology and
behaviour ¡V information vital to the success of its conservation in the
wild.

The research team is based in Wyndham, WA, and the volunteer position will
continue for at least three months. All expenses will be paid, along with
some salary. Experience in fieldwork, research and/or bird-watching is
recommended but not essential. Applicants must be comfortable with outdoor
and physical working conditions.

Fieldwork will involve all aspects of the project and include some or all of
the following activities:

?X      Hiking, looking for nesting sites
?X      Bird-watching and identification
?X      Nest observation
?X      Data management
?X      Vegetation surveying and measurement
?X      Mapping and GPS navigation
?X      Nest box construction and placement
?X      Feed station construction and maintenance


This position is available to begin immediately, as the project is currently
running.
