Hi,
I've been following this list with interest for quite a few months and this
is my first post. I'm off to NT (Darwin, Kakadu, Pine Creek) in a week's time
and would love some information on birding. I should have plenty of time for
birding so I think I will be OK with the commoner NT specialties (especially
after searching the archives here), but would appreciate any guidance or tips
on some of the harder to find species - particularly if any of these have been
showing consistently anywhere of late: Red Goshawk, Rufus Owl, Gouldian Finch,
Great-billed heron, Chestnut Rail, Bush hen, Little Curlew, Partridge Pigeon,
Rainbow Pitta, White Browed Robin, Barn Swallow and Zitting Cisticola.
Also, not necessarily NT specialties but some birds which I seem to miss
everywhere else might be easier in the NT - I'm thinking Sanderling,
Pratincole, Button Quail (either), Oriental Cuckoo, Brush Cuckoo, Nightjar or
Red-Browed Pardalote.
And a final question. I will be hiring a two-wheel drive car, so will not be
able to travel on unsealed roads. This means I wont be able to drive to Gunlom,
so is there another place somewhat more accessible where I might be able to see
the escapement or sandstone specialties like Banded Fruit Dove, White Throated
Grasswren or Sandstone Shrike Thrush ?
many thanks in anticipation. Any advice will be appreciated.
