Just passing on a new locality record for a rare and threatened species in
Victoria.
There has been the first official record of Brolgas from within the River
Red-gum forest boundary in Barmah State Park north east of Echuca (Late
Feb - early March 2007). The birds were detected during a survey for
cryptic waterbirds (crakes and rails) in northern part of Barmah State
Park.
An adult pair of Brolga was observed by biologist Keith Ward
(Goulburn-Broken Catchment Management Authority) and an atlas card has
been completed.
Brolgas are a threatened species in Victoria and ALL sightings should be
formally atlassed. Keith has an image of the birds with a pair of Emu
also in the photo.
I encourage all birdos to forward their observations to the relevant state
fauna databases, especially in these dry conditions that may be pushing
birds into new locations.
