1. Missing emails: One of the great mysteries of the Internet is the
route taken by data moving from one computer to another. Email seems
to make the most of this "great unknown" by taking oddly circuitous
paths from A to B, and then really confounding everyone by suddenly
taking the shortest possible route. You can get some idea where you
emails have "been" by looking at the headers. An email to your
colleague in the same building may go via a mail server in another
state or even another country. It depends mostly on who provides your
internet connection. I've often had instant replies to messages sent
to other continents, yet had to wait an hour or two to see a reply
from a work colleague - even when we've both been online the whole
time. Sometimes Birding-Aus messages show up immediately - sometimes
they take hours. I have not been able to find an clear explanation
for this.
2. Marilyn's email: It was sent to Frank, and to Birding-Aus, but
was held for moderation due to being flagged by one of the content
filters. Frank replied "to all" and the original was included. This
is a timely warning to be VERY CAREFUL when using the "reply to all"
feature of your email program. If I could filter out replies-to-all
I certainly would! It's a danger not confined to birding-aus. I
have a colleague who accidentally sent a reply to our entire school
- staff and students.
3. BA v BOCA I've been a member of both - and would be now if I
could (a) find my subscription form and (b) remember to pay it on time.
4. Catholics v Anglicans. If you thought people got worked up about
parrots, banding and other recent controversies, then they have
nothing on this one! I'm an Anglican and I teach in a Catholic
School. Let's not start this sort of debate!!!
Now I really must get back to work - that's what I'm here for, after
all - so how about we let these other hot issues go for a while?
Cannon netting was done to death years ago (no pun intended) and
there is no point turning over the fig parrot story until more
evidence is provided from either "side".

G'day all
I think I missed the email from Marilyn as well - or was it only
sent to
Frank O'Connor. Would you please let us know Frank? I've just
looked in
the archives and it doesn't show up there either.
For what it's worth I've been a member of both organisations but
found BA
fit my requirements more as I became a bit more experienced and
learned
more about birds. I'm now only a member of BA. I still enjoy
reading my
dad's BOCA magazine 6-times a year however!
I see the Catholics and Anglicans are looking at the possibilities of
merging. Maybe our two birding organisations could do the same. Less
administrative overheads would be a good thing.
Cheers
Steve
