Many thanks to those who replied to my inquiry from last Friday about the
bird that appeared in the field guide with a red dot accidentally printed on
its rump.
After various people had many stabs at what the hell I could have been on
about, Chris Tzaros came through with the goods. The bird I was thinking of
was an illustration of a Horsefield’s Bronze-cuckoo in an early edition of
Slater which had a red spot on the left side only of the under tail-coverts.
My edition seems to have gone missing (I too like others on a different
thread have several field guides) so I couldn’t check it.
So mystery solved. And to anybody who has been using the red undertail spot
as a diagnostic tool for identifying, Horsefield’s Bronze Cuckoos, maybe not
such a great idea.
