Goats at the You Yangs

Hi everyone

I spent a few hours at the You Yangs this afternoon (recovering from a dentist visit earlier in the day!). I haven't been here since the fires of last summer and was shocked by how much of the park had been burned, but even more so by the lack of regrowth. Whatever did grow after the fires seems to have withered in the extremely dry winter and spring. Most of the waterholes were dry, and numbers of birds seemed a little lower than in my last few visits.

The biggest surprise of the trip, however, was seeing a pair of goats near the Big Rock circuit track. The male was huge - I suppose they were escaped domestic goats, due to their size, and the fact that they didn't seem to be bothered by me walking along the track behind them. The ranger office wasn't open so I wasn't able to report the sighting. Has anyone else seen goats at the You Yangs, or is it likely they are recent arrivals? What should be done about them?

Russell Woodford
