Thanks to Howard and all the others who posted or replied on this topic and my original post on the cost of Bird Call CDs .

After following the correspondence resulting from my original query on the cost of bird-call CDs compared to printed field guides I am more than satisfied that they are good value and can fully appreciate the amount of effort involved in their compilation. I will own a set one day.

It was not so much the actual cost that troubled me but the cost disparity in comparison with a printed field guide. Perhaps I should have asked "Why are printed field guides so cheap?" Doubtless it is a matter of the size of the market. I know lots of non-birders who carry a field guide on their travels (fellow fishers or caravanners) but would not be interested in a CD of bird calls even if it was free.
