I note the recent correspondence on this subject and comment on cost and
copyright amongst other matters.
In general it must be stressed that CDs are compiled after an immense
amount of time and effort. Many people have contributed, for instance,
to the BOCA series, and on the basis that it is an educational tool.
Professional, commercial CDs are also available and once again for
individual use; one should respect the expertise, time and effort put
into the production.. I can assure all readers that when these factors
are taken into account the cost to the public is in no way excessive.
Enjoy the content but don't abuse the privilege accorded you by the
expertise of others.
With reference to mention of the BOCA CD set; that set is not yet
complete. The tenth and final CD will be published very soon but it is
pertinent to stress that this is a Field Guide, intended to assist bird
watchers develop skills in recognition of birds via their calls. BOCA
does not, and never has, advocated use of this field guide for call-up
purposes. Use your ears, identify the species, then learn to look in
the correct area; it should not be necessary to further invade their
space.
