Magpie COOLING behaviour

After the thread running on Magpie and other species "sunning", as I drove
home this afternoon through Diddillibah, SEQ, the temperature on my car
thermometer was 38 degrees and outside was like an oven.

Close beside the road was a well ploughed field - probably sandy loam - and a
Magpie had dug itself [or found] a neat fit trench and was sitting in it. The
sides and front and back of the hollow were about level with the Magpie's back.
If it had dug the hole, it would have been lovely cool soil. I wonder
whether this was an actual planned behaviour of the bird, or whether it was
simply chance that this is where it chose to be at that time.

Any thoughts or other like experiences?

Robyn
